Mujeres de Maiz Zine 2016 Project

This is my 11th community arts book project that i have volunteered to produce. It's always such a difficult task to comb through the submissions. Over the years our Zine publications have evolved into beautiful 30-60 page soft-bound booklets with 20-30 poems, and over 15-25 full color pages of original works. We showcase over 30 visual artists & poets in every issue. Our volunteer staff take great pride in our community arts publications and do our best to honor submissions with great respect. Due to our low budgets, we can only print a limited amount of zines. All zines are sold on a first come, first serve basis.

I am very excited with our submissions. This year we are showcasing Sarita Sol Gonzalez, who is an 11 year old poet. Sarita Sol Gonzalez is a Performance Poet and fifth grader from Albuquerque, NM. Writing herfirst poem when she was in second grade, Sarita is one of the youngest writers in theAlbuquerque poetry community. Her poetry reflects her love of her community and passion forher culture. She has been published in various anthologies including Kids With Causes APoetry Anthology of Youth Voices and Las Palabras Mothers and Daughters (Swimming WithElephants Publications). She has also self published a chapbook titled Solita. Sarita has sharedthe stage with poetry duo Sister Outsider (Denice Frohman and Dominique Christina),Albuquerque Poet Laureate Jessica Helen Lopez, ABQ TEDxYouth, and many others fromAlbuquerque’s vibrant poetry community. We are very honored to be publishing some of her poems in our zine.

So now, it's Martha, me and Maritza for the rest of the night making the zine 2016 happen somehow... Editing, Getting ready for layout and making lists for contents and notifications... Etc...

But our least favorite thing to do is saying "no" to submissions ...there are so many beautiful voices in our community that must be shared.

Thank you to all the beautiful women who took the time to submit their passions and share their lovely voices with us. We are truly grateful for this opportunity to give back to our communities in such a big way.I ❤ making books.
